Abstract of Research Project
Carbene complexes have been shown to be good catalysts for several C-C bond forming reactions. Representative
examples include catalytic Heck type reactions, the Sonogashira coupling and Suzuki coupling reactions. In this
project we try to incorporate the substrate selectivity into the C-C bond formation process. It is intended to
achieve this by preparing transition metal catalysts bearing NH, NR functionalized carbene ligands.
Synthesis of suitable carbene complexes could be carried out by different synthetic strategies like cyclization
of ß-functionalized isocyanides, at a metal center or by the reaction of deprotonation of alkyl benzimidazoles with
transition metal complexes followed by N protonation.
As the first part, synthesis of several carbene complexes will be attempted followed by the study of catalytic
activity and the substrate selectivity studies including kinetics will be made.
