Abstract of Research Project

As an alternative route to the synthesis of free N-heterocyclic carbenes and its coordination to metal centers, the intramolecular cyclization of coordinated aliphatic isocyanides will be employed to yield the less common non N-functionalized carbene complexes. Taking advantage of the control over the number of coordinated units that this methodology confers, the synthesis of group 14 and related transition metals polycarbene complexes will be undertaken, specifically aiming at the construction of sp² or sp³-carbon bridged polycarbene macrocycles. The expected stability of such compounds and their related redox species could be, in principle, valuable for the investigation of oxidative addition/reductive elimination reactions.
