The development of new applications of machine learning and "artificial intelligence" in the last decade has generated great expectations in the potential of these technologies, also concerning the transformation towards sustainability. As part of the work package "AI and Sustainability" of the project "Interdisciplinary Teaching Programme on Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence" at the WWU, target group-specific communication and teaching materials are developed, implemented, and evaluated based on the state of research on sustainability implications, challenges and potentials of AI in connection with the didactics of Education for Sustainable Development. The project uses desk research and expert interviews to develop the materials.
The materials will address important questions about the sustainability potential of digital technologies and questions about the implications of increasing digitalization for energy and resource consumption. The social consequences of problem-solving approaches based on algorithms will also be discussed.
