History

Since 1902, the Theologische Revue has been the leading Catholic journal for book reviews. More than 150 authors from Germany and abroad assist us in evaluating and positioning several hundred new publications in theology and cognate disciplines every year.

The position of the journal editor is filled in an honorary capacity by a member of the Faculty for Roman Catholic Theology. Former and current editors include Franz Diekamp (1902–1924), August Bludau (1907–1909), Arnold Struker (1925–1944), Josef Gewieß (1948–1958), Bernhard Nisters (1948–1960), Hermann Eising (1959–1970), Erwin Iserloh (1971–1988), Vinzenz Pfnür (1971–1995), Harald Wagner (1996–2009), Thomas Bremer (2009–2020), Adrian Wypadlo (2020-2023) and Clemens Leonhard (since 2023). The Revue presents contributions to current theological debate in six printed issues per annum.  Since 2020 a monthly digital issue has additionally been made available as Open Access e-Journal, published according to the same high-quality standards.

2023, an advisory board was established to advise and support the chief editor in his work. This advisory board is made up of representatives from the four theological sections. Currently, Adrian Wypadlo (Bibl. Theol.), Nobert Köster (Hist. Theol.), Michael Seewald (Syst. Theol.) and Clemens Leonhard (Prakt. Theol.) are the members of the advisory board.

Book reviews of theological literature and cognate disciplines as well as leading and feature articles on important theological subjects are meant as a contribution to current theological research. The Theologische Revue has a similar purpose and approach as its protestant counterpart, the Theologische Literaturzeitung.
