Manuscript requirements

The editorial board accepts articles on themes which lie within the scope of the journal. These can be submitted in German or English. Simultaneously the author (m/f) or authors' collective (henceforth "the author"/ "the authors") should provide a short text in which they explain why their work should appear in OZeAN and the relevance of their article. If an article has more than one author, the individual who writes the explanatory text will be viewed as the main author for correspondence purposes. He or she is responsible for forwarding information to his/her fellow authors.

The manuscript should not be longer than 25 A4 pages; one page is about 3,800 characters (including spaces). It is also possible to submit longer studies, following consultation with the editorial team.

Upon submission of the manuscript the author is to present a signed declaration that he/she consents to the publication of the article in Open Access (CC BY). At the same time he/she is to provide a guarantee that he/she possesses the copyright to all the material included (graphics, Open Data).

The Manuscript

The manuscript must be written in electronic form as text data in a common format (*.doc, *.docx, *.odt, *.rft, *.txt) and submitted electronically via email or on a data carrier. The text should be unformatted; it must not contain hyphenation, indentations, automatic numbering or other formatting. The font size must be 12 points and the margins 1.5 lines. The submitted text should be clearly structured, but should not contain more than four types of heading:

  • Heading level 1
  • Heading level 2
  • Heading level 3
  • Heading level 4

To facilitate the integration of the article, the manuscript should include the following:

  • Title in German and English language

  • First name and surname of the author, GND-ID and/or ORCID-ID if available
    Example
    Ulrich Werz (GND http://d-nb.info/gnd/129973491; ORCID https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8889-2116).

  • Complete address of the corresponding author with Academic title and institutional affiliation, including email address and telephone number;

  • Abstract in German and English (about 100 words each);

  • Up to 5 keywords in English and their translation into German. The keywords (persons, geographical/ethnographical, technical, or historical/temporal terms) should if possible follow the norms of the GND (https://d-nb.info/1022924354/34) and its related URIs. The keywords should be separated with commas
    Example
    Keywords: Augustus (http://d-nb.info/gnd/118505122), Germania Magna (http://d-nb.info/gnd/4235874-7), Gaul (http://d-nb.info/gnd/4019150-3), Coin circulation, Halved coins.
    Schlagworte: Augustus, Germania Magna, Gallien, Münzumlauf, Halbierungen.

  • Text of article;

  • Linking of text using norm data following the rules of Linked Open Data
    Example
    The chronology of the coins which were minted by Augustus for his adopted sons Caius and Lucius Caesar (RIC I (2) 206, 207, 208, 209, 210, 211, 212) is subject of scholarly discussion.

  • Address of the author (if this is to be published).

Footnotes and Abbreviations

Footnotes should be used for citations. Literature citations should not be placed in brackets in the text body, but should be placed in footnote texts at the bottom of the page on which the reference occurs. The footnotes are to be used in the style of the humanities, rather than that of the natural sciences, in that additional remarks to the text – naturally in somewhat abbreviated form – can be included in them. The footnotes should be numbered consecutively.

The common abbreviations, as well as the abbreviation of periodicals, series, lexica and reference works should follow the guidelines laid down by the Deutsche Archäologische Institut (https://www.dainst.org/en/research/publications/publishing-at-the-dai/dai-citation-style-and-abbreviations). Behind the reference to the literature the permalink to the norm data or the DOI, if these are at hand, should be added.

Example
R. Wolters, Nummi signati. Untersuchungen zur römischen Münzprägung und Geldwirtschaft (Münzen 1999). http://d-nb.info/954647475

Works of ancient authors should be cited in the manner of the Der Neue Pauly III (1997), pp. XXXVI-XLIV (see also https://referenceworks.brillonline.com/entries/der-neue-pauly/erweitertes-abkurzungsverzeichnis-COM_004#d22797960e14280 for the use of abbreviations).

Use of graphics in text

Every page has a type area of 165 x 240 mm. available. These dimensions should be taken into account when including illustrations, photographs, maps and graphs (henceforth referred to as 'graphics'). They should be submitted individually, in electronic form, in the formats *.bmp, *.tif, *.jpg or *png. When submitting images of coins, obverse and reverse illustrations must each be submitted in a separate data, and the data name must contain the number of the illustration (taken from the text), followed by "a" for the obverse and "b" for the reverse. Photographs and maps should have a quality of 300 dpi when in the required size; line drawings a quality of 600 dpi and be submitted in grayscale (not black/white). Graphs should be in colour without hatching or pixelling. Legends relating to graphics should be written in a plain, straightforward font without serifs. The editors/layouters do not expect to have to re-work the submitted graphics.

The graphics should be numbered consecutively. The legends of the illustrations, photographs or graphs should be included in a separate data file. They should explain the content of the graphics and include the picture credits with all the relevant references. The editors require that the author(s) are the copyright holders and/or are legally allowed to publish the graphics. Along with the declaration of their consent to the publication of articles in OZeAN, the authors must confirm that they possess the necessary publication rights to their material.

Open Data and supplementary information

Open Data and supplementary information will be saved on the server at the University of Münster and linked with the text. It is possible to link databases, audio and video documents as well as 3-D scans with the articles.

The databases can help to avoid long and complicated citations. The databases should be presented as csv-data files in UTF-8. Authors should take care to use commas, in order to allow the documents to be read internationally. Figures should be presented in 'international' format with "1.3" instead of "1,3". Film documentation should be submitted as *.mp4 or *.avi and audio documents as *.mp3. 3-D material should be saved in an open document form (ASCII)., in order to allow them to be separated from a particular format. Depending on the composition and purpose of the 3-D graphics these can be saved long-term in the formats *x3d, *.dae, *.obj, *.ply or *.stl (see https://www.ianus-fdz.de/it-empfehlungen/3d). In every case it should be stated which programme has been used to create the data and with which programme it can be read.

The Open data will be referred to in the printed volumes alongside guides to further information where necessary.
