The article shows theological social ethics in the field of tension between cognitive and normative claims of validity, which are partly universalistic, partly particularistic. It articulates skepticism against the idea that the discipline would enter normative criteria and principles into an empirical description of social structures. Rather, it advocates trusting the interdisciplinary social theory to develop normativity. As a consequence, Christian social ethics must be oriented towards social science.
It cannot improve society, but its own theoretical work. With regard to practical relevance, the scientific reflections remain provisional, not only in normative terms in relation to practical discourses in society. The relevance of the social analysis also depends on the fact that social actors recognize themselves in it in their life situation and that it is helpful for them to reflect on and define their political practice.
