The essay deals with the change of perspective in the shadow of the Columbus year 1992 and deals with some tasks concerning these fields: the unresolved papal-curial co-responsibility for colonialism, the colonial-ethical debate between the foundation of colonialism and the critique of colonialism, the encounter with the other religions and the postcolonial theologies. He pleads for a critical re-reading of the joint responsibility of theology and church for colonialism, but also for a self-confident perception of the universalistic European traditional criticism of colonialism in view of the globalization crises of the present, for a theology of religions on the base of an enlightened inclusivism, and for a critical theological reception of postcolonial theory.
