Abstract

This article reflects how Christian faith can articulate itself under conditions of “multiple modernity”. Therefore it refers to the works of Karl Gabriel concerning the sociology of religion, especially Catholicism. First, it gives some thoughts on systematic-theological reception of theories of sociology of religion. Then, the article presents central impulses of Gabriel, e. g. how his works are driven theologically, how he deconstructs sociology of religion’s master narrative, or the term “multiple modernity”, and interprets them
systematic-theologically in order to write forth Vaticanum’s “theology within the signs of the times”. Especially the religious freedom is relevant in the context of the biblical testimony of God’s kingdom.
