Since the establishment of the public broadcasting companies in Germany the catholic and protestant churches are playing an important role in the controlling committees. According to the media concepts of their churches they feel obliged to serve not only the church but the whole community. They are engaged in different commissions and in many committees they have taken over the chairmanship, because they are respected as neutral and competent in mediation. As a result of an investigation the representatives of the churches in the “Rundfunkräte” are convinced, that these committees are sufficiently far-off from political influences, they feel loyal to the companies, which they have to control, and they wish to support them in keeping a strong position in the media market, also by their activities in the world wide web.
