Notes for the Author

From the File to the Book

In cooperation with our printing and distribution partner, who produces the printed version, we support you with consulting and service offers during the various steps of the publication process:

  • Information about the creation of the document
  • Acceptance of the file, ISBN assignment
  • free publication of the online version on the University of Münster's publication server miami
  • Creation of the printed version
  • Notification to the "Verzeichnis lieferbarer Bücher" (VLB) and to various online stores
  • Inclusion in the ULB catalogue
  • Delivery of data to major library catalogues and search engines
  • Information on registration with VG WORT
  • Dispatch of the obligatory copies

The Way to the Publication

  • You format your manuscript according to some specifications and create a PDF file that you deliver to the ULB.
  • After checking and preparing the file for printing, the ULB will conclude an author contract with you.
  • The ULB forwards the print files to the printing and distribution partner.
  • You will receive a proofreading version and can report improvements if necessary.
  • The book is printed.
  • You will receive your author copies and the invoice.
  • The ULB publishes the digital open access version on the University of Münster's publication server miami free of charge.
  • The print edition of your book is available through bookshops for a period of at least five years.

The printed volumes appear in series that correspond to the University's subject canon and institutions (medicine, musicology, physics, economics, sociology, philology, etc.).

Your Work stays your Work

As an author, you grant the ULB only a so-called "simple right of use". Therefore, you can continue to publish your publication in another form if required. Permission from the ULB is therefore not necessary. For more information, see the Your Publication/Legal Advice section.

The Author Contract

An author contract is concluded between you and us. It regulates costs, services, the deliverability of the work, rights of use, etc.

Printing-on-Demand

The printed version is produced using the so-called printing-on-demand (PoD) process: Copies are printed only when an order is received. This prompt production, which does not involve any advance financing or storage costs, results in favourable production and sales prices. In addition, the publication is in principle never out of print, because another copy can be printed at any time.
The volumes of the University of Münster's publication series have the format DIN-A5 and receive a coloured softcover binding; on request, illustrations on the front book cover are also possible. Further special equipment (e.g. hard cover binding) is possible upon request.

Costs

There are no costs for publishing the digital open access version on the publication server miami.

The printed edition is financed by authors or editors. The costs depend on the number of copies ordered and on the total number of pages and the number of colour pages. As an author, you will receive the books at a reduced purchase price.

If you are interested, please contact us for an individual cost calculation.

If the printed book is adequately distributed in academic libraries, you can apply for royalties when you report your publication to VG WORT. You can use this to reduce your publication costs again.
