Brass bands and big bands are very common in German secondary schools today. They have been successfully established as a new form of music education within the school system. The alleged potential to foster the pupils’ creativity is often considered to be a central quality of this form of music education. But to what extend can creative practices like improvising or composing actually be realised in the classroom? What kind of consequences for teachers and students are resulting out of the fact that the emphasis in brass band classes is put on creative music making?
