Empirical studies concerning the geographical representations and imaginations of “Africa” alongside studies of students’ attitude towards the continent show Eurocentric perceptive tendencies that have manifested stereotypes for decades. Analyses of school books also detected a negatively connotated geographical imagination of “Africa” (cf. Poenicke 1995 etc.). Besides a broad range of influences, Geography classes take part in the establishment of representations of “Africa”. Therefore, questions arise on how the place “Africa” is constructed via specific contents, perspectives and communicative means. Thus, place as a social construction (cf. Wardenga 2002 etc.) is focused on that is created as a geographical imagination (cf. Said 1978) through language, semiotics and constant (re-)production. Hence, this dissertation examines the characteristics of constructions of “Africa” in Geography classes, if and to what extent they contain postcolonial structures and what underlying factors affect these constructions.
