Special emphasis is put on magnetic ordering and transport properties of ternary cerium compounds formed in the systems cerium-transition metal-silicon (germanium, tin, and indium). Cerium compounds constitute another exception within the series of the rare earth metals, because cerium may have a valence status of CeIII or CeIV. This results in a variety of properties, such as Kondo or heavy fermion behavior, antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic ordering, strong crystal field splitting, or superconductivity.
