arc-melting techniques
High-melting compounds like transition metal carbides, silicides or germanides can effectively be synthezited by arc-melting in water-cooled copper crucibles. We have recently build up a miniaturized arc-melting apparatus for laboratory use for melting reactants and for sealing metal tubes under cooling conditions.
