Sustainability for Science - Science for Sustainability! Poster Symposium 2024
On Monday, October 7th, 2024, the third poster symposium of the PhD program "SP BioSciences" at the University of Münster took place at the Schloss. The event, themed "Sustainability for Science – Science for Sustainability", provided participating doctoral students with an opportunity to present their research projects, receive valuable feedback, and engage in discussions about sustainable approaches in science.
After an opening speech by Laura Schmitz-Gielsdorf from the organizing team and an inspiring keynote from guest speaker Prof. Dr. Bruno Moerschbacher, a two-hour poster session followed. During this session, early-career researchers showcased their work in biomedicine, plant science, and microbiology. Poster awards were given to the posters by Paula Terroba Navajas, Katharina Eickelpasch, and Anna Brinkhege.
During the poster session, companies Qiagen and BioTrend had stands where they presented their sustainable products and engaged in discussions with participants. Following this, there were two insightful talks: representatives from Qiagen shared strategies for enhancing sustainability within the company, followed by a Zoom talk from Prof. Una Fitzgerald of the University of Galway, who spoke about implementing sustainable lab management. A plenary discussion with the three speakers then explored how science can become more sustainable, the challenges that lie ahead, and what everybody can do for reaching this goal.
The evening concluded with snacks and drinks, fostering a relaxed atmosphere that encouraged vibrant conversations about life as a PhD student in the SP BioSciences program. The symposium was a great success, furthering the dialogue on sustainability in science.
