Glycosaminoglycan dependent activation of matrix metalloproteases

Current advances

Jakobs/Grobe/Seidler aim at the characterization of HS-dependent MMP activation that has already partially been worked out by Pickhinke. The aim of this project is the identification and characterization of glycosaminoglycan species that can specifically enhance the activation of specific MMPs, such as MMP9, in contrast to other proteinases. This activation may also possibly explain the observed HS-dependency of Shh release and activation. These experiments will be done in collaboration with Lalitha and Swamy.
