Rachel Rasing grew up in York, North Yorkshire, Great Britain and studied Modern Languages with Politics in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne before going on to do her teacher training at the University of Sheffield. After qualifying as a teacher, she spent nine years teaching French and German in a high school, where she was also responsible for the training and guidance of student teachers and head of the German department. In 1995 she met her German husband at that very same school and followed her heart to come and live in Germany a year later. Before starting work at the English Department of the University of Münster, she worked as a freelance teacher of technical English inside German companies, for example the car industry supplier Hella, based in Lippstadt. She has been a permanent member of staff in the American Studies Department since 2002. Her interests include African American women writers, the works of American author Kate Chopin and post-World War II American drama.
