New research project on health communication in the Münsterland region

(24.04.2019) On 1 April the research project “Is health communication successful?”, headed by Prof. Dr Bernd Blöbaum and Prof. Dr. Volker Gehrau, was launched at the Department of Communication. The three-year project revolves around the question of how scientific results and expert knowledge on health prevention can be communicated effectively.

The initiative stands out due to its regional focus: In cooperation with partners from the health business located in the Münsterland region (such as doctors and health insurance companies), the research project identifies and analyses needs for and possibilities of regional health communication in order to design and implement pilot projects. Special emphasis is laid on the analysis and evaluation of the potential of different measures and means of health communication, in particular with regard to preventive health care, in a rural environment. Bearing in mind that diverging target groups (especially different age groups) rely on varying media portfolios for retaining information, the project examines and puts to test both possibilities and effects of social and legacy media for strategic health communication. Besides, a second research project headed by Prof. Dr. Stefan Krings from the Department of Ecotrophology and Facility Management at the University of Applied Sciences Münster analyses the potential of interpersonal communication for preventive health care.

The research project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as part of its “Innovative Universities” program. As one of thirteen research projects, the initiative participates in the University of Applied Sciences’ research consortium “münster.land.leben” that focuses on questions of preventive health care, integration and well-being in rural environments. On behalf of the Department of Communication, the team consists of Dr. Hannah Lorenz M.A. as project coordinator as well as Carla Schieb M.Sc. and Thi Sam To as research associates.
