MISDOOM 2024: Department of Communication Hosts an Interdisciplinary Symposium on Misinformation and Disinformation in Online Media

(May 3, 2024) Together with the European Research Center for Information Systems (ERCIS), the Department of Communication (IfK) will host this year's MISDOOM conference from September 2 to September 4, 2024. This international and interdisciplinary conference not only brings together perspectives from communication and computer science, but also offers a networking platform for practitioners from journalism and fact-checking, as well as experts from the business sector.

In addition to presentation formats showcasing current research findings, this year will mark the first time a doctoral workshop is offered. In small groups, participants will have the opportunity to discuss PhD topics, methods, and data with experienced mentors from the social sciences and computer science.

The "Multidisciplinary International Symposium on Disinformation in Online Open Media" (MISDOOM) is an interdisciplinary conference that brings together international scholars from the social sciences and computer science who research misinformation, disinformation, and related topics. Additionally, MISDOOM serves as a networking platform for practitioners and experts from internationally relevant sectors, such as media organizations or online security companies, to present and discuss current findings, techniques, and methods.

Previous MISDOOM conferences took place in Hamburg (2019), Leiden (2020), Oxford (2021, online), Boise (2022, online), and Amsterdam (2023). This year, the conference will be hosted by Prof. Dr. Thorsten Quandt (IfK Münster) and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Grimme (ERCIS) at Münster Castle.

Submissions as extended abstracts can be made until May 15, 2024; applications for the doctoral workshop are open until May 30, 2024. Further information on submission formats, applications for the doctoral workshop, and the call for contributions can be found on the official conference website. Questions to the organizing team can be directed via email to info@misdoom.org or on social media on X/Twitter or Bluesky.
