Fighting Spirits

In Barbara Meiers Film wird thematisiert, was geschieht, wenn die Dinge außer Kontrolle geraten. Persönliches Unglück, Epidemien, Blutvergießen, Unfruchtbarkeit und andere Plagen sind die Folgen für die Menschen und die Umwelt. Die wilden Geister übernehmen dann die Kontrolle und Menschen, Wahrsager und berüchtigte Rebellenführer werden von ihnen besessen. In Norduganda führte eine solche Situation zu einem über 20 Jahre währenden blutigen Konflikt zwischen Rebellengruppen, wie der ‚Lord’s Resistance Army‘ angeführt von Joseph Kony und der Regierungsarmee seit der Machtergreifung des jetzigen Präsidenten Yoweri Museveni. Seit 2006 schweigen im Norden Ugandas die Waffen. Die Menschen, kehren aus den Vertriebenenlagern in ihre zerstörten Dörfer zurück und sind mit dem Wiederaufbau ihrer sozialen und ökonomischen Existenz befasst.  Mit der Hilfe ihrer Ahnengeister beginnt der Wiederaufbau ihrer Gesellschaft.

Tzotzil-Maya Music

This video was produced by Thomas John while doing fieldwork on indigenous media and art practices in Chiapas (Mexico). The Tzotzil Rock band Yibel Jmetik Banamil ("raíces de la madre tierra") is giving a rock concert at the village feast of the Tzotzil community "La Candelaria" in the highlands of Chiapas. The band mixes traditional instruments and melodies with the music genre "rock" and they "rock" in Tzotzil language. The local village authorities of the community La Canderaria recognized the rock band as cultural bearers and invited them to their village. Contrarily to the earlier years of the band, nowadays there is a broader acception of their practices, since the traditional authorities appreciate "Tzotzil-Rock" as a form to maintain the local language among yongsters.

During his research, Thomas John also did two music videos for the Tzotzil- Maya Hip Hop Band Slajem Kóp which mixes traditional melodies and sounds with rap. You can find them here and here.
