Trace elements in Peatlands
Biogeochemistry of trace elements in peatlands of North-Eastern China (DAAD-PPP)
Background
Only very few studies exist on natural peatlands in North-Eastern China. Especially in the Changbai Mountains area, some peatlands have been developed just in vicinity of the volcano Changbai Shan. As this volcano had a strong eruption in the year 946 and several small eruptions before and after, the history and development of these peatlands in close vicinity is unclear to date.
Within this project we aim at elucidating the development of peatlands in the Changbai Mountain area by use of decomposition indicators, element records and dating. Methods
The peat profiles are being analyzed for element contents using XRF and EA-IRMS for C, N, S contents and isotopic composition.
