The research profile of the University of Münster not only emphasises individual, disciplinary strengths, but also focuses on cultivating interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration. This strategic orientation addresses the pressing challenges facing our society today, supports creativity and promotes innovation.

The University of Münster strives to dynamically integrate new impulses from our researchers and strategically focus on areas of excellence in order to continually refine its research profile.

Impact areas

Researchers at the University of Münster work collaboratively to develop solutions to today’s complex challenges. The interdisciplinary strengths, resources and societal impacts resulting from their research activities in Münster have been bundled into four overarching "impact areas".

Profile areas

Our "profile areas" are strategically relevant fields where outstanding researchers from various disciplines and faculties come together to collaborate. These are clusters of thematically related research projects, joint activities in teaching and transfer, and corresponding infrastructures and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.

Emerging fields

"Emerging fields" refer to innovative areas that possess the potential to shape the future profile of the University but are not yet supported by extensive third-party financing. These fields receive support designed to promote interfaculty collaboration and further growth.

Clusters of Excellence

Our Clusters of Excellence “Mathematics Münster” and “Religion and Politics” exemplify our integrative approach to research excellence. Both clusters are characterised by internationally renowned structures, outstanding research achievements and excellent researchers. They serve as central drivers of trans- and interdisciplinarity.
